We are a soup company so why dog broth? We’ll, I’ve been blessed to have raised six golden retrievers in my lifetime. I currently have two at home now, Palmer and Nikki B. I love dogs and have no shame in admitting I follow many adorable pups on Instagram. But the tales of Ande Edlund and his dog Dash stole my heart and my philanthropic soul. Not only was I drawn to them both because of their connection to my alma mater, Washington State University, GO COUGS! ... but more importantly, because of the profound impact this special dog had on the community during what became the toughest time of Dash’s life.
A Stroke of Serendipity
In a stroke of serendipity, at a Seattle Mariners “Bark at the Park Night,” Dash became an internet sensation after a photo and video of him eating a hot dog went viral. His fantastically loveable face quickly gained him over 79,000 followers in the blink of an eye. It was from this point forward that Dash’s canine philanthropic career really exploded. His ‘hooman’, Ande Edlund, had already been a longtime supporter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, roots that tie him back to his father’s passing many years ago. Now, with Dash’s newfound fame, he too would start supporting his own causes, raising six-figure dollar amounts for animal healthcare charities.

An Honorary Cougar
Not only was Ande a WSU alum, but so too were both of his parents and by proxy, that made Dash an automatic Coug. With his outwardly positive motto; “If you have the power to make someone happy, do it,” Dash quickly became a cherished figure on campus, forming special bonds with sports teams, professors, students and WSU’s very own cougar mascot, Butch. He was later embraced as an Honorary Cougar and even received a “Dogtorate” degree from the WSU College of Veterinary Medicine, a testament to his unwavering spirit and dedication to medicine.

A Courageous Journey
Little did Dash or his ‘hooman’ know that soon they would find themselves on the other side of their enormous charitable giving. In a poignant turn of events, Dash came face to face with his own health struggle when he was diagnosed with a cancerous mass on his spleen. Despite the challenges, Dash embarked on a courageous journey, undergoing surgery and chemotherapy while continuing to spread joy and positivity to his charities and to the thousands of fans around him. Sadly, his battle came to an end in the Spring of 2024. Now, Dash’s legacy lives on through his little brother Chase, named after “chasing his brother’s footsteps” who now follows in Dash’s paw prints, carrying forward the spirit of love and giving.
A Great Gift for a Great Cause
A story like this, one that tugs at the heartstrings and celebrates the life of a beloved companion, truly embodies the essence of warmth, compassion, and the unbreakable bond between humans and our furry friends. Dash’s journey, along with many other canine friends, sparked a flame within me and inspired me to use Palmer’s Bone Broth for Dogs as a vehicle to help raise awareness and funding for canine cancer research.
In honor of Dash, Gift of Soup will donate 20 percent of all Palmer’s Bone Broth for Dogs sales to canine cancer research, half of which is sent directly to Washington State University VetMed in support of their incredible cancer research initiatives. It's our way to pay tribute to Dash's legacy and to give back to our furry friends who bring immeasurable joy into our lives.
